In order to get to the start of our hike we caught a little mountain train from Bayonne to St Jean Pied de Port (foot of the Pyrenees and still in France). It was a very scenic trip and we noticed that the train was steadily climbing. We spent the remainder of the day preparing for our tramp and took an evening walk around the ramparts above the town. This pretty town is a popular starting point for pilgrims walking the long (800km!) trail in Spain - the Camino de Santiago de Compostela (as in the movie "The Way").
Here is an overview map of our route, from GPS waypoints taken along the way.
